The little story

Huge like the whale, tiny like the krill.

A mysterious spout, a boat rocking on a wave, and a whale that splashes Little Reindeer: it is breathing, through two holes on top of its head! To see all of it, they dive in a submarine: it is huge, even bigger than the dinosaurs. And it eats animals that are tiny: krill, which twinkle in the dark. On the way, they meet a seal and a baby whale, a calf.

For parents

The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived, bigger than any dinosaur, and it feeds almost only on krill, small sea animals about as long as a child’s finger. The episode turns this surprising fact into two opposites, each with a gesture: huge, arms wide open, and tiny, finger and thumb almost touching. During the three-second pauses, let your child answer: it is their turn. Watching the same episode a few times helps new words stick.

Things to discover together

  • Five new words, said and then repeated: wave, splash, huge, tiny, twinkle.
  • A whale breathes through two holes on top of its head: its spout is its breath.
  • Huge and tiny are opposites: the whale and the krill, side by side.
  • Krill twinkle in the dark, like little stars.
The polar ice walk in the game: the whale under the sea, its calf in a bubble, and Girafoufou telling where it lives and what it eats
In the game, the whale lives on the polar ice

In Discoveries, the walk “The polar ice” takes your child to meet the penguin, the polar bear, the seal and, under the sea, the whale: one tap, and Girafoufou tells where it lives, what it eats, krill, and about its baby, the calf, which appears in a bubble.

Ooh! What was that?! The biggest whale in the world! Can you feel the boat going up… and down? Whoa! It’s all wobbly! Look what’s rocking our boat… a wave! It’s the sea, rising up high… and rolling onto the beach! A wave! Say it: wave!

Over there! That big spout again! Who’s doing that? The whale! It lives in the sea, and comes up to blow a big spout of water. Let’s go and see it! It’s the biggest whale in the world! Hello, whale! Where are you? It… splashed me! It didn’t mean to: it’s breathing! Just like you… but through two holes, on top of its head! Splash means sending little drops of water flying everywhere!

Splash! Say it: splash! To see all of it… let’s go under the sea! In a submarine! It goes on forever! It’s… huge! Huge means very, very big! Huge!

Say it: huge! It’s the biggest animal in the whole world. Even bigger than the dinosaurs! And what does it eat? Sharks? Boats?! Big fish… or little animals? Little animals! Really, really little… tiny! Tiny means very, very small! Tiny! Say it: tiny!

It eats lots and lots of tiny sea animals, called krill. This krill is as long as your finger… but next to the whale, it’s tiny! Oh! A seal! The seal! It’s a very good swimmer. Hee hee! And now… let’s switch off the light! Look carefully… What can you see?

The krill make their own light! They… twinkle! Twinkle means shining and flickering, like the stars. They’re twinkling! Like little stars! Say it: twinkle! Here come the waves again! And this time… it won’t splash me! Hey! You too?! And its baby is a calf: a little baby whale! Bye-bye, whales!

Do you remember? Tell me the words! The whale is…? Huge! And the krill are…? Tiny! Well done! Girafoufou says: make your hands twinkle, like the krill! Brilliant!

Now go and find Mummy or Daddy, and tell them: the biggest whale in the world eats animals that are… tiny! They’ll never guess! Goodbye, friends! Bye-bye! See you soon!
