Counting to 3: touch each object, then say how many

In the first touch-counting game, children touch groups of two or three objects. Each touch supports the count. There is no wrong-answer choice, so the child can focus on each object and the group as a whole.

Count each object once

Look at the objects together before starting. Leave time for the voice and the child’s finger to stay together. When the last object has been touched, name the total. A different arrangement can still contain the same number of objects.

Keep the group small

The aim of this first level is not to recite as far as possible. Repeating two or three in several arrangements can be a more comfortable activity than rushing to a bigger group. Later levels introduce four and five.

SIDE BY SIDE

Touch, count, notice the whole

  1. Look at the little group.
  2. Touch one object at a time.
  3. Say how many there are altogether.

This game starts with two and three; use one object in the off-screen activity when a smaller step helps.

Play touch counting

The discovery games are free to try without a card or account. Full family access is paid. Check Prices for the current plans in pounds; changing between French and British English does not require another purchase.

PUT THE SCREEN DOWN

You will need: Three toy animals and three large toy cups.

  1. Give one animal a cup, then two, then three.
  2. Count the cups as you place them.

What if my child counts an object twice?

Try moving each real object to one side as you count it together. In the game, wait between touches. Keep the group small and model the action calmly.
