Blending sounds games: from c–a–t to cat

Blending joins spoken sounds into a word: the sounds in c–a–t make cat. Girafoufou’s English game says the sounds separately and asks the child to find the matching picture.

Use sounds rather than letter names

Saying “see, ay, tee” does not model the sounds of cat. Listen to the game’s British English voice and let the sounds join into the whole word. Begin with sounds the child has already met at school or in earlier activities.

A picture gives a meaning to find

The first blending level uses short words including cat, dog, pig, sun, map, bag, hen and bat. Later levels introduce other spellings. This is a focused listening task, separate from independently reading a sentence or remembering a word’s appearance.

SIDE BY SIDE

Hear the word taking shape

  1. Listen to the separate sounds.
  2. Say the whole word together if your child wants help.
  3. Choose its picture and try another only when ready.

The English activity uses English words and sounds. The French syllable machine is not part of this path.

Questions
from parents.

Must my child read the written word first?

No. This activity asks the child to listen and recognise the word from its sounds. Written word-building is a separate activity in the path.

Carry the idea a little further.
