BRITISH ENGLISH · DISCOVER TOGETHER

Rhyming games for preschoolers: cat, bat… can you hear it?

Rhyming words share an ending you can hear. In the English game, children listen to a word and choose a picture whose name rhymes with it. Reading the written words is not required.

The English rhyming game: moon, with star and spoon picture choices

Listen to the ending

The English activity uses cat and bat, dog and frog, car and star, and moon and spoon. Say the words naturally and notice the shared ending. The car and star pair follows the British English pronunciation used by the game.

Rhyme is not the first sound

Cat and car start alike but do not rhyme. Cat and bat start differently and do rhyme. Keep those two listening questions separate. The French rhyming families are different; the English game has its own words and pictures.

SIDE BY SIDE

Find a matching ending

  1. Listen to the reference word.
  2. Name or listen to the choices.
  3. Choose the picture whose word ends the same way.

The activity contains four English rhyming families. It is not a nursery-rhyme song collection.

Questions
from parents.

Does spelling matter in this activity?

The child listens for the ending rather than comparing written letters. The pictures and spoken words carry the task.
