Listen to /tʃ/

The sound in chip, from the English game. Written form: ch.

Two letters working together

A pair of letters representing one sound is often called a digraph. For this activity, ch is one sound rather than a c sound followed by an h sound. Introduce it after the earlier sounds feel familiar, following the sequence used by your child’s school.

CH and SH are different in English

Chip starts with a brief /tʃ/, while ship starts with /ʃ/. The French ch in the French game represents /ʃ/, so a French sound page cannot simply be translated into this one. This page concerns the ch pronunciation in chip; English has words where ch is pronounced differently.

Questions
from parents.

Is English CH the same as French CH?

Not in these examples. English ch in chip is /tʃ/. French ch in chat is /ʃ/, like English sh in ship.

Carry the idea a little further.
